Medical Reimbursement Trust

The PRIME Plan is an employer-funded medical trust account. It is similar to a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) where you can access your account to pay for qualified medical expenses on a tax-free basis. (Qualified expenses are outlined under IRS Publication 502).

Any balances not used in the current year are carried forward until they are exhausted. Your account balances can be used in a post-retirement setting, creating a bridge account between your retirement date and your Medicare eligibility date. This feature gives you the option to retire when you first become eligible under your applicable State Retirement System. In addition, account balances are interest bearing, allowing you to accumulate additional money until you retire.

Through the PRIME Plan, you are reimbursed for qualified medical expenses by our third-party administrator, Pelion Benefits. After incurring the medical-related cost, you complete and submit:

  • a reimbursement claim form (link to reimbursement claim form)
  • a copy of an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) form, invoice, or receipt showing the type of service, date of service, and charge for the service provided
As a PRIME Plan participant, you will receive a quarterly statement of all account activity and you will have online account access 24x7.
